Description
Originally from Mexico, the serrated leaves have a very spicy flavour. With dark purple stems and olive green leaves this is a pretty plant and becomes even more attractive when the pink-mauve flowers arrive.
Culture
Although slightly less tender than the Thai basil, the plant should still be located in a sunny sheltered position. Prone to slug attacks, letting the soil surface dry out will help, as will keeping slug harbouring weeds well under control. Or grow in pots.
Harvest/Use
Pick leaves as required and trim flowers to promote new shoots. Pinch growing tips to encourage plant to bush. Use in stir-fry dishes.
