Organic Cultivation

Description

Delicious leafy vegetable/herb. Originally from Japan (often referred to as Japanese Basil) this hardy annual produces an abundance of tasty leaves somewhat resemblent of large leaved basil. Coming naturally in green or purple, each has a slightly different taste - a mix between cumin and aniseed.

Culture
Plant out the plugs in rich and humid retentive land from March. Frost hardy, the plants will develop bushes of 0.5-1m high. Pinch out the growing tip to promote the side shoots. Mulch well with stray/grasscuttings/newspaper to retain humidity. Water in dry weather.
Harvest/Use
Pick leaves as required. If allowed to flower, the flowers too can be used as a sweetener (very sweet, they are used to make Japanese sweets).
