Organic Cultivation

Description
Hardy leafy member of the cabbage family more normally used in salads. Produces a large head of 'cut and come again' pointed leaves from a substantial root. Resistant to the cold and drought.
Culture
Plant out the plugs in prepared ground from March. Keep an eye out for slugs who love the dender young shoots and flea beatle which causes small holes in the leaves (protect with summer fleece). Resistant to drought, but will crop better and produce more tender leaves if watered. In winter do not allow the root to be waterlogged or it may risk rotting. Will tend to run to seed in the spring. Follow crop rotation as per cabbage family.
Harvest/Use
Allow to develop a true head before the first cut then crop the young leaves as required. If allowed to dry out the leaves can become less tender - these can be steamed as per cabbage. Keep cutting throughout the year, even winter, until spring
